The art of using clay to mold things is very old. Clay sculpting is generally a very simple procedure. Many people do it at home as a form of leisure time hobby. Other people make sculptures like professionals for commercial purposes. If you want to use your arty skills, clay sculpture art is much better, and it is adaptable. On the contrary, drawing and painting is much more difficult, and talent specific than molding. Thus, you should try clay molding to enter the art world. Like every other thing you do, clay modeling needs a plan. The following tips and guidelines will help you as you start.
• Set a goal – Before you can go to the step of buying tools and materials, think about how far you want to go as a sculptor. Perhaps you want to remain a hobbyist or to become a professional. Could it be you want to develop you kids’ sculpting skills? Simply come up with a purpose or a goal for sculpting.
• Look for clay materials – If you are new in this field, chances are that you know that clay is the main material to use. On the other hand, you may not know the best type of clay to use. Polymer clay is the best type, if compared to other types. You can find it both in serious art shops, and in hobby art stores. The key advantage of using polymer is the ease of baking it at home. Normally, you need to heat it in the kiln at about 275 degrees Fahrenheit. However, this will depend on the sculpture size. The other types of natural clay include the stoneware, terra cotta, and earthenware. Natural clays are in other words, the water-based clays. On the other hand, polymer clay is synthetic. It means that you could alter polymer clay to look like a stone or metal. It is the simplest type to use for clay sculpting
• Search for tools – If you use polymer clay, you have to buy special tools. These include a sand paper, acrylic paint and a clear gloss. You need tools such as wires, spoons, scrapers, bowls, a stand and so on. This explains why this clay type is the best because it is easy to use. The clay cutting tools are normally in wire forms. To create beautiful details on the sculptures, you need to buy a couple of detailing tools. You, too, need a good kiln, as you work with most natural clays.
• Get your hands dirty – One of the things you have to be used to would be dirt when working with clay. You will be using your hands often when preparing the clay, and molding things with it. The other thing you should know is the item you want to sculpture using clay. Read the rest of this entry »

So much depends upon you having good woodworking kit. Of course, there are many different possibilities for the meaning behind woodworking kit. It could refer to anything from tools bundled together to sets of plans to a kit containing all the materials needed to build a particular item. Most things can be bundled into a kit. Despite this, that statement holds true; no matter which facet of woodworking kit you have in mind there is a lot depending upon it being good.
To sum up, what different sorts of woodworking kit is there? There are ‘kit’ projects which bundle together the plans and materials to let you get started on a particular project. For example, you might find you could purchase a chicken coop kit that came with everything you needed to get started. Kit could also refer to tools, which are sometimes bundled up into a kit. To complicate matters further these could be either hand tools or power tools. Another use of kit may refer to an individual tool which is sold with numerous add-ons. Then of course there are kits that contain thousands upon thousands of designs. Those are intended to help you get started with whatever project you find yourself needing to tackle.
So what’s in all these various kits? You might be asking. In a hand tools set you will probably find the usual suspects such as hammers, screwdrivers, chisels, planes, mallets, saws, and so forth. A hand tool kit is certainly everything you would presumably need to make anything at all, though for efficiency you really need to turn to power tools.
In a power tools kit on the other hand, you would probably find less items due to the expense. Three or four bundled power tools would seem reasonable. Such deals might offer a jigsaw, a router, a power drill, a sander and perhaps even a high-speed rotary tool.
Another meaning of kit could be referencing a set of plans and materials to build a specific item such as a chicken coop or a model boat. Such kits have big advantages as the purchaser can then get started on the project right away without having to outsource materials (much, there’s usually something missing). Ideal for the impatient!
Then there are kits containing thousands of project files that give you plans and instructions for building anything you like. It has to be said that when it comes to a kit of plans, one good thing is that it only needs to be purchased once, and from then on you have a library of plans to refer to. Could be a good investment no matter what your level of commitment to woodworking – be it hobbyist or something more serious.
Given that all these meanings crop up when talking about woodworking kit, it’s a wonder that carpenter’s stay sane. Fortunately woodworking itself is therapeutic!
As mentioned earlier, good kit, regardless of the form it takes, is essential. The last thing a woodworker needs is for tools to break, edges to blunt, or power to fail at a critical moment. Similarly, if purchasing a kit containing plans there should be plenty of variety so that you don’t find yourself having to purchase more plans in the near future. Eventually you will surely have to purchase plans, something very specialist is bound to crop up, but until then the idea is that your kit handles any topics that could crop up, foreseen or otherwise.
And of course, if kit refers to materials, then that speaks for itself and hardly needs elaborated on.

A topic that many people who have spent time making candles get intimidated by is how to make gel candles. Because it seems like a different form, it tends to be scary, but in reality, it isn’t much different than normal wax candles. The basic rules continue to be the same and as you learn how to make gel candles, you will quickly find that there aren’t too many things that you have to do differently in the process. Here are a few pointers that can help you move along more quickly in the learning curve.
One of the first things that you have to decide when you learn how to make gel candles is how creative you want to be. The advantage of gel is that its translucent color allows you to do things that you would normally have trouble doing with wax that you can’t see through. Some examples are seascape candles, piggy banks for children in which you can “float” money that they receive as they burn the candle, and drink candles such as martinis and glasses of wine.
Once you have decided which route you are taking, it should be noted that gel candles normally work particularly well in glass. The wax adheres to the glass better than attempting to release it from stainless steel or plastic, but it can be done. Just remember as you learn how to make gel candles that you are working with a product that works in the same way as gelatin, and if you’ve ever tried to get it out of a Jell-O mold after its set you can understand that problem. Gel candles are certainly firmer, but the scientific structure of the wax is the same.
Another thing to keep in mind as you learn how to make gel candles is the use of zinc wicks. They are more expensive, but they will become your best find if you wish to be successful. Cotton wicks work well with other waxes because on a molecular level, other types of wax are larger. When you are working with gel, a cotton wick will absorb the wax more quickly, causing the wick to burn faster and unevenly.
When you work with gel candles, everything else is essentially the same as other types of wax. As you learn how to make gel candles, it becomes easier from this point to remember the basics of normal candle making. Never apply heat directly to gel wax. The temperature goal is 200 degrees Fahrenheit. Glue the wick to the base of the glass and use a prop to keep the wick in place as it dries. Remember that with gel candles this is as much an aesthetic device as the way that the candle burns. Pour like you normally would and allow it to set. Read the rest of this entry »
Do you look for Christmas craft ideas every year? Try to rack your brain for some ideas for some Christmas tree crafts, or gifts to make?
This year, why not try making some recycled denim tree ornaments? These can become treasured memories and have a rustic, yet artistic flare to them. They also make great gifts for friends or Grandparents.
This is how you make them:
Find a pair of soft but worn out jeans, and trace two circles on them (the widest part of the leg works best). (using a jar lid or any size you want works)
Sew the circles together with 1/2 inch seam allowance, but leave a small space for stuffing your denim ornament.
Clip the seams every 1/4 inch or less, to make a fringe, with sharp scissors.
Make a few and then wash them and then throw them in the dryer, this will create soft white, fuzzy fringe, for that rustic effect.
Stuff your denim ornament with polyester stuffing or something soft, and then sew the opening shut, with a piece of decorative cord for hanging on the tree.
Now the fun part, decorating.
Depending on the age of your kids, get out the decorating supplies. These can be sparkles, rhinestones, embroidery, fabric paint, quilting.. ANYTHING you want. Denim makes a great canvas. Beading looks really good on here too.
If you get started with these denim ornaments now, then your kids or yourself, will have the time to really let their artistic talents shine, before all the festivities begin. I have seen these completely covered in sparkly beads, and they really shine with any Christmas lights.
You now have a cherished, rustic, piece of art. You can’t buy that at the discount store!
